We round up everything coming to streaming services this week, including Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV+, ThreeNow, Neon and TVNZ+

Mind Menders (Neon, June 8)

Join presenter and mental health advocate Sonia Gray for a revealing documentary series on whether psychedelic drugs could be a beneficial treatment option for Aotearoa’s ongoing mental health crisis. She explores the psychedelic revolution happening in our own backyard and meets with the pioneers paving the way for psychedelics to be introduced as new medicines. Gray even participates in a microdosing LSD trial in a quest to treat her anxiety and better understand the potential healing power of psychedelics. Like Hamilton’s Pharmacopeia or Have a Good Trip, this documentary series is bound to expand your mind.

Ocean with David Attenborough (Disney+, June 8)

Recently celebrating his 99th birthday, David Attenborough shines a light on both the beauty of the sea and the multitude of ways in which humans are depleting its finite resources in the absorbing and compelling Ocean with David Attenborough. With the state of the ocean forcing Attenborough to question the future of life on the planet in its balance, this breathtaking and enraging documentary is the greatest message he’s ever told,” according to its producer. Be sure to check out this passionate case against the ruination of the seas.”

Diary of a Junior Doctor (TVNZ+, June 3)

Shot at Middlemore, Aotearoa’s biggest and busiest hospital, the Diary of a Junior Doctor follows five junior doctors during the uber-important first rotation of the year. Akin to the heart-rending 24 Hours in A&E, the series goes beyond the scrubs to examine the emotional toll and personal cost that comes with working in the health care profession. This raw and compassionate look at the emotional highs and lows of life on the medical frontline makes Diary of a Junior Doctor an illuminating must-watch for all New Zealanders.

The Survivors (Netflix, June 6)

The Survivors follows Charlie Vickers as Kieran Elliott, who returns with his young family to a close-knit Tasmanian coastal town still reckoning with the tragic decade-old deaths of three residents. Upon Elliott’s homecoming, a bloated body washes up on the local beach and the ripple effect unleashes suppressed secrets and a savage killer. Also starring local acting royalty Robyn Malcolm, The Survivors is bound to be a bloody good murder mystery.

Stick (Apple TV+, June 4)

Even if you’re not a golf fan, Caddyshack and Happy Gilmore are proof that the sport can be as thrilling on screen as it is on the green. In Stick, the beloved and much-memed Owen Wilson is a flamed-out former pro golfer in the midst of a marital crisis. He encounters Peter Dager’s Santi, a troubled teenage golf phenomenon, and is convinced to take the pubescent Tiger Woods under his wing. Recalling Ted Lasso or Next Goal Wins, this charming sports comedy looks on par for greatness.

Pick of the Flicks: Rumours (Netflix, June 5)

Premiering at Cannes, you’ll either love or hate this kooky new outing from legendary Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin. Set at a Bavarian castle and following the leaders of the G7 intergovernmental bloc, the heads of state gather to draft a tepid response to an unspecified global crisis. Suddenly alone and attacked by petrified corpses and a squelching brain, these paranoid political elites are pitted against each other in a sporadically ingenious, occasionally chilling and entirely bonkers phantasmagoric satire that has to be seen to be believed.
